lately i feel so removed... ...doin' the things that i do soundtrack: calexico last night was odd. i became increasingly frustrated with the thesis, finding dr. dude's demands unreasonable given the time constraints. so i take a break with luke and we go to the s.u. to see the breakdancing battle. now, i should mention that i am no expert in breakdancing. i have seen one other breakdancing thing and that was in chicago - an amazing group of 10 guys performing at the taste of chicago festival, and the occasional 80's movie (i recommend 'breakin' and 'breakin2'). so last night luke and i showed up at around 9:30, and caught the warm-up. there were 14 groups of 2 guys (well, of course they were all guys - although later in the night this really rad girl started dancing and she made me want to learn). there were 2 rounds of 2 on 2, and then the final battle, which was a 3-way. at any rate, it was really awesome to see that people are still really serious about breakdancing. 'cause it's fucking rad. there were lots of reedies there, too, which was fascinating because the s.u. was filled and there was loud music and it wasn't for formal or some other scary-drunken-nastiness. and the fucking dancing! i am in love with it. i want cj to teach me about hiphop. his thesis deals with the commodification of hip hop, and he told me about his 18page diskography for his 'history of hiphop' intro chapter. i want that list and i want everything on it. maybe he will teach me a thing or two. so it was really fun to watch these guys battle. yeah. but then i did not go to sam's and i called when the battle was over and they were all drunk already and heading to bed. so i rode home and peter was 20 feet ahead of me on his bike and he didn't notice me or hear me shouting to him. i couldn't sleep so i watched emmit otter's jugband christmas. it's a really good movie. makes me feel all comfortable and moderately sane, mostly because it makes me think of being a little kid and watching it... |
